Located 55 kms north of Fort McMurray on the Athabasca River's west bank, Fort MacKay is a community of 186 residents. Fort MacKay is completely surrounded by oil sands activity, an industry that serves as the community's primary employment source, besides seasonal forestry work, hunting and trapping. The community is linked to Fort McMurray by all-weather paved Highway 63, with daily bus service provided by Fort MacKay Transportation. An airstrip is located three kms south at Mildred Lake. In summer months, barging service is available on the Athabasca River. The local volunteer fire department provides basic fire protection; ambulance service is supplied by the Fort McMurray Fire Department; and policing is handled by the RCMP detachment in Fort McMurray. The local elementary school, operated by the Northland School Division, offers K to Grade 8, with older students bussed to Fort McMurray.
