Anzac

Anzac was established in 1917 as a point on the Alberta and Great Waterways Railway line, and its name is a combination of the first letters of World War I's Australia and New Zealand Army Corps. Situated 45 kms southeast of Fort McMurray, Anzac is a community of 548 residents who enjoy a rural lifestyle in a community that affords relatively easy access via paved Secondary Highway 881 and Highway 63. Anzac has gained international acclaim with its annual Winterfest, which brings up to 10,000 people from Fort McMurray and around the world. Contestants take part in the dog sledding, snowmobile and cross-country ski races, as well as a fishing derby and King and Queen of the North Competition. The local volunteer fire department serves Anzac and Gregoire Lake Estates, while other community services, including ambulance, policing, health and seniors' services, are all provided from Fort McMurray. In emergencies, both the Fort McMurray Fire Department and Fort McMurray Detachment of the RCMP may be reached through the 911 system. The local elementary school, operated by the Northland School Division, offers K to Grade 8, with older students bussed to Fort McMurray.
